While radiation therapy has been shown to be highly effective for many forms of cancer, it must be delivered with great precision to be effective and to avoid exposure to nearby organs. Traditionally, patients have also received small, but permanent, tattoos or marks on their skin to help position their bodies during treatment.

At FCS, patient safety and comfort are at the center of all that we do. As part of continuing investments in the most advanced technologies, FCS recently added Surface Guided Radiation Therapy (SGRT), an AlignRT® system from Vision RT, the inventors of and leaders in this technology.

SGRT helps protect the heart and other organs from radiation exposure. Additionally, this three-dimensional, non-invasive technology enhances the precision of radiation treatments and enables shorter treatment schedules.

In less than three months after installation, FCS was able to reduce treatment times by two to three minutes per patient and deliver mark and tattoo-free treatments for all patients being treated for breast, prostate, and head and neck cancers. It also eliminates the need for uncomfortable headgear and closed masks often used when treating certain cancers.

Patient response and outcomes have been favorable. FCS has also earned the Vision RT Tattoo and Mark-Free Award, recognized among the country’s leading centers who have optimized SGRT technology for their radiation therapy patients.
