Jessica Schmit, MD
Dr. Schmit is a board-certified medical oncologist and hematologist with Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute in Gainesville, Florida.
Dr. Schmit received her medical doctorate from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Miami, Florida in 2010. During this time, she was inducted into AOA (Alpha Omega Alpha), a national honor society that recognizes medical students, residents, faculty and alumni who demonstrate excellence in scholarship, leadership, professionalism and service to the community. Dr. Schmit completed residency training and a hematology and oncology fellowship at the University of Florida (UF) in Gainesville.
She began her career at the North Florida/South Georgia VA in 2016 and was promoted to chief of hematology and oncology in 2019. During this time, Dr. Schmit also served as assistant professor in the department of medicine division of hematology/oncology at UF, where she was recognized for excellence in teaching and for providing positive impact to fellowship education.
Dr. Schmit has made significant contributions to improve cancer care for U.S. military veterans by fostering collaboration at local, regional and national levels. Her leadership positions include appointments as chair of the Cancer Committee and chair of the Transfusion Committee for the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System, the largest VA health care system in the country. Within the state of Florida, she served as the lead for the VA Heme/Onc Community of Practice and co-chair of the Cancer Committee for VISN 8 VA Health System. At a national level, she has been a member of the VA Oncology Field Advisory Board, helping to drive initiatives to enhance hematology and oncology care to veterans across the nation.
In addition, Dr. Schmit is dedicated to advancing the field of oncology and has authored numerous published clinical research abstracts and articles, which have also been presented at professional symposiums.
Dr. Schmit considers it “an honor and a privilege” to walk alongside individuals who have been diagnosed with cancer. She strives to work with each patient and family to provide individualized, holistic care and offer treatment tailored to each patient’s needs and situation.
She joined FCS in 2025 and enjoys reading, writing, art, spirituality and spending time with family.
