A visit to her dermatologist to check what she thought were simple skin lesions indicated that Stephanie had cancer. Tests later revealed the diagnosis of Stage IV lung cancer. The schoolteacher and mother of three had never smoked. A biomarker test performed by FCS medical oncologist Dr. Syed F. Zafar found a rare genetic mutation. Rachel Clark

Now, every month, in her mother’s memory, Rachel delivers a flower and a note to FCS Medical Oncologist/Hematologist Dr. Jennifer Byer to be given to one of her patients that day.

There were no early signs to warn Susan Bellamy that she had breast cancer. Tarshia Rivera
Florida resident Tarshia Rivera was diagnosed with an aggressive stage 3 breast cancer in 2014. After successfully completing intensive treatment therapy with Florida Cancer Specialists, the mom of four young children learned her cancer had spread to her other breast. Fortunately, through participation in three different clinical trials offered through FCS’s Drug Development Unit, she had a positive response. Her message: Never give up.
Terry Garrie
Terry Garrie experienced an unexpected loss of voice for several months, which he initially attributed to laryngitis. When his voice returned, it was hoarse, prompting him to seek medical help. After receiving treatment and a dire diagnosis, Terry came to Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute (FCS) for a second opinion.
Under the care and recommendation of FCS Medical Oncologist and Hematologist Kristen Gonter-Aubin, DO, Terry opted to participate in clinical trials with FCS Associate Director of Drug Development Judy Wang, MD. Terry immediately had a positive response to his treatment with minimal side effects. Now, if you ask him about his experience at FCS, he’ll proudly share that Dr. Gonter-Aubin and Dr. Wang are his “guardian angels.”
