Fort Myers, FL – December 7, 2018 . . . Florida Cancer Specialists FCS Physicians Drs. Lucio Gordan (Gainesville),Manish Patel (Sarasota) and Lowell Hart (Fort Myers) were all invited speakers at the recent ION Precision Medicine Summit for Community Oncology, held in Charlotte, NC in early September. Natasha Khrystolubova, Clinical Pharmacy Manager for Rx To Go, the FCS in-house specialty pharmacy, was also an invited speaker. In addition to being a speaker, Dr. Gordan, who was recently named President and Managing Physician for Florida Cancer Specialists, also served as the organizer and moderator for the Summit, which provided new information and discussion about Precision Medicine as it applies to community oncology practices.  The two-day conference was sponsored by ION Solutions, a part of AmerisourceBergen, and the largest physician service organization and group purchasing organization specializing in community oncology.

ION convened an expert panel of oncologists, pharmacists, nurses and administrative staff, chaired by FCS Founder and President Emeritus Dr. William Harwin, to develop guidelines for genetic and genomic testing, which were presented at the Summit. According to ION, “Community oncology practices will now be able to better determine when and how to test appropriately, manage the challenges of payer reimbursement for testing and, ultimately, connect patients with the most effective personalized treatments.”

Dr. Harwin said of the new guidelines, “These recommendations are vital in helping community oncologists stay abreast of the latest updates in precision medicine and the growing number of genomic and genetic tests that can impact care.”

Dr. Gordan added, “Researchers anticipate that by 2025 more than 50% of oncology therapies will require some type of genetic testing. These new guidelines, which currently cover six disease states, are a true turning point for practices that are planning to provide more personalized care to their patients.”
