Florida Cancer Specialists’ Patients Set Sail for a Healing Day at Sea

Naples, FL - March 9, 2017……… More than two dozen Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute (FCS) patients and their caregivers set sail on Wednesday, March 8, for a relaxing afternoon on the water, courtesy of Sailing Heals, a Massachusetts-based non-profit organization that hosted the event. This was the fourth annual lunch and healing sail, conducted in partnership with volunteer host captains from the Naples Sailing & Yacht Club.

Brad Prechtl, CEO of Florida Cancer Specialists, said, “A relaxing few hours on a sailboat can make a big difference in the lives of patients and their families who are affected by cancer. It is extremely gratifying to see our patients enjoying such a memorable experience. We are grateful to Sailing Heals and to the volunteer captains from the Naples Yacht Club for providing this opportunity to our patients and their families.”

FCS Founder and President, Dr. William Harwin, added, “Patients’ attitudes often do affect outcomes, so this experience does have a therapeutic benefit. Activities that relieve stress and worry and allow patients and their caregivers to enjoy life are just what the doctor ordered.”

Florida Cancer Specialists medical oncologist Dr. Susan Morgan and other FCS team members helped coordinate the guests for the event and joined in the festivities. Dr. Morgan said, “Sailing Heals offers FCS patients who are going through one of the greatest challenges in life a chance to get away from it all and simply enjoy a healing day out on a beautiful boat and create wonderful memories with family and friends. And, because cancer can also present financial challenges for families, we love the fact that it’s complimentary to our guests!”

Since beginning in 2011, Sailing Heals -- with support from Panerai, Eisai Pharmaceuticals and private donors -- has hosted seaside lunches and yachting events in over 20 ports in nine different states for nearly 2500 VIP guests. Sailing Heals matches owners of beautiful boats (sailing or motorized) with patients and their caretakers and hosts them for complimentary sails, often accompanied by a water-side lunch or picnic. Invitations to participate in the Sailing Heals program are by word-of-mouth through medical personnel.
