Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute Announces $10 Million Tampa Cancer Center

Nation’s Largest Privately-Owned Oncology/Hematology Group Plans New Facility

Tampa, FL – September 7th, 2011. . . . . . . Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute held groundbreaking ceremonies today on the site of the new Tampa Cancer Center, located at 3402 W. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. The $10 million facility is scheduled to open in the fall of 2012.

Brad Prechtl, CEO of FCS, said, “The Tampa Cancer Center, coupled with the growth of our practice in Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties, is indicative of our commitment to set a new standard in cancer treatment and to demonstrate the true power of what community oncology can be.”

A number of physicians from Florida Cancer Specialists were on hand for the event, including Dr. Julio Lautersztain and Dr. David Wright, both of whom practice in Tampa and serve on the Executive Board of Directors for FCS. Dr. Lautersztain said, “We currently have 13 locations and serve almost 30,000 patients annually in the Tampa Bay region. This new facility will increase our ability to offer unique, state-of-the-art, multidisciplinary oncology treatments that deliver new and personalized cancer therapies, providing renewed hope to an even greater number of cancer patients. This approach, in conjunction with our cutting-edge clinical trials program, allows us to bring to our patients the most up to date cancer treatments available.”

Dr. Wright added, “As physicians, our goal is to diminish the effects that this disease has on patients, and one day to have all types of cancer become treatable, chronic diseases that patients can live with. To that end, we are committed to delivering the most advanced treatments available in a setting that is community-based where patients know their doctor well and can be surrounded by their families and friends.”

The Tampa Cancer Center is being developed and built by Optimal Outcomes, LLC, a St. Petersburg-based healthcare facilities firm that utilizes evidence-based design to achieve functional and aesthetic outcomes that increase operational efficiencies for providers while also creating environments that enhance patient experiences and reduce stress. Empirical evidence supports the process of involving multiple parties and considering factors such as stress, efficiency, safety, privacy, and noise in design. These factors impact a broad range of patient emotions and the resultant healing process.

Patrick Marston, Principal, Optimal Outcomes, said, “Our approach considers the impact our buildings will have on those who utilize and occupy them. We take proven design elements that are effective and appreciated elsewhere, then use them, enhance them and supplement them to create an environment that is most beneficial to the needs of patients, physicians and staff members.”

  • the need to improve staff and material flow to achieve operational efficiencies
  • the ability to accommodate technological advances
  • consumer demand for more family-centered care
