Florida Cancer Specialists Press Release
Time to Remember FUNraiser proceeds top $1.2 million for Florida Cancer Specialists Foundation
Naples, FL – May 9, 2016……… As promised, the 500 guests of Time to Remember enjoyed a magical, Motown-inspired evening of fabulous entertainment, dining and dancing, all while raising funds to assist cancer patients who are financially in need. By night’s end, donations from sponsors, donors and guests generated $1.2 million, which will go toward assisting individuals undergoing cancer treatment who may be unable to work and are struggling to make ends meet.
“We were so grateful to have so many caring people share in the evening's success,” said Patty Baker, Event Chair. “The funds raised will help allay a lot of worry for cancer patients and their families.”
Baker went on to say that the event’s success would not have been possible without the tremendous efforts of Founding Chair Jackie Bearse and the incredible committee she assembled.
“Our goal was $1 million,” said Bearse, “and exceeding that is simply beyond thrilling. I am overwhelmed by the generosity of all the donors. We more than doubled the amount raised from our inaugural event in 2014.”
The FCS Foundation provides non-medical financial assistance to qualified cancer patients, helping them with expenses such as rent, mortgage, utility bills, phone bills, auto payments and car insurance. In addition to events such as Time to Remember and other fundraising efforts, the FCS Foundation is actively supported by the physicians and employees of Florida Cancer Specialists.
FCS Foundation Board Chair Brad Prechtl, who is also CEO of Florida Cancer Specialists, said, “In my role as Chair of the Foundation, I see first hand the amount of effort it takes to produce an event of this caliber. The level of coordination and time spent planning to raise the money we did – and most importantly, the lives that will be touched as a result, is inspiring. All of the people who helped make this event a success, starting with Jackie and Patty, the committee members, board members and other volunteers, attendees and sponsors... all are to be commended for their caring spirits and level of giving.
FCS Founder and Managing Partner Dr. William Harwin added to the accolades by saying, “The entire evening was magical. There was a remarkable spirit of giving that just permeated the room and I was both humbled and amazed by the generosity of the patrons and sponsors. Personally, I have several patients who have been helped by the Foundation. I remember one patient in particular who, with tears streaming down his face, wanted to thank me for telling him about the assistance the FCS Foundation provides. The money raised at this event tonight will do a lot of good for our most vulnerable patients.”
The evening began with cocktails and conversation in the Vanderbilt Courtyard of The Ritz Carlton, Naples, and an opportunity to meet and be photographed with Martha Reeves, music legend and First Lady of Motown. Equally gracious and gregarious, Ms. Reeves mingled with guests and posed for countless photos, pleasing so many of her music fans who looked forward to her performance later in the night. Attendees then moved into the ballroom, where the event’s black and white theme was displayed in the elegant table arrangements and spectacular centerpieces.
After a fabulous dinner expertly prepared by the Ritz Carlton culinary team, auctioneer Scott Robertson started the exciting live auction, where guests raised their paddles with gusto to bid generously on the marvelous auction items. A week stay at a stunning penthouse condo in Provo, Turks & Caicos, donated by Patty & Jay Baker, was the highest winning item, selling twice for a total of $85,000.
A poignant video of patient Rebecca Berg’s cancer journey and her gratitude to FCS Foundation for the help it provided her with living expenses she could not afford, was the prelude to the Fund-a- Family portion of the auction. Rebecca’s story so inspired guests that $360,000 was donated to directly support cancer patients and their families. Together the live auction and Fund-a-Family raised $550,000, bringing the total amount raised from the event to $1,200,000.
The fun wasn’t over yet, as next Martha Reeves and The Vandellas took the stage and brought the crowd to their feet - and the dance floor - for the rest of the evening. They performed their signature hits including “Jimmy Mack”, “Heat Wave,” “Nowhere to Run,” and of course, “Dancing in the Streets,” as well as several other Motown classics. It was, most definitely, a night – and time - to remember.
