Tampa, FL and Orlando, FL – May 18, 2016……… Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute (FCS) is pleased to announce that Dr. Julia Cogburn, Dr. Vipul Patel and Dr. Meera Iyengar have all been named as Man/Woman of the Year 2016 by two regional Florida chapters of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). After a spirited fundraising campaign, these outstanding physicians and community leaders soared in the competition to raise funds for blood cancer research and earn the coveted title of “Man/Woman of the Year.” Together, the FCS doctors raised over $308,000 for LLS!

Dr. Julia Cogburn, who practices in Tampa and Brandon, FL, was named “Woman of the Year” by the Suncoast Chapter of LLS and raised an amazing $152,000! Dr. Cogburn said, “I am honored and blessed to have earned the title of Woman of the Year for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This organization funds critical research that translates into improved therapies and survival rates for blood cancers.”

Designated “Man of the Year” by the North & Central Florida Chapter of LLS, Dr. Vipul Patel raised $56,000 for the organization. Dr. Patel, who practices in Inverness and Ocala, said, “The Man/Woman of the Year Program not only supports blood cancer research but also patient services, advocacy, public and professional education, and community services as well. I am so pleased to represent this great organization that contributes so much to blood cancer research and to our patients.”

Dr. Meera Iyengar, who was named “Woman of the Year” by the North & Central Florida Chapter, added, “What a thrill it is to be Woman of the Year, and, along with my colleagues at FCS, to help raise funds for this vital research. LLS lessens the burden for our patients and families through education and financial assistance; through their partnership with oncologists like me, LLS works hard to make a difference in the lives of those living with hematologic malignancies.” Dr. Iyengar, who sees patients in Clermont and downtown Orlando, raised an incredible $100,000 during her campaign.

FCS CEO Brad Prechtl is understandably proud of the fundraising efforts of these physicians, stating that it reflects the philanthropy shared by many physicians, other clinicians and staff at Florida Cancer Specialists. “We strongly support the LLS mission,” said Prechtl. “Every day of research brings the cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma a little closer and improves the quality of life of patients and their families.”

Dr. William Harwin, Founder and President of FCS, also had accolades for the three physicians. “Drs. Cogburn, Iyengar and Patel know what a difference the research makes,” he said. “Just this past April, for example, a new therapy was approved for patients with a high-risk form of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). LLS supported the research for this particular treatment, which brings a much-needed option to some 36,000 patients in the U.S. who are living with this rare subset of CLL.”
