Medical Physicist Charles Able to Present Research to American Association of Physicists in Medicine

Florida Cancer Specialists’ Physics Team’s Research Chosen for National Meeting

Hudson, FL – May 24, 2016……… Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute (FCS) announced today that the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) has selected several research initiatives authored by FCS Physics Team lead by Director of Physics Charles Able, M.S., DABR. Mr. Able has been selected for an oral presentation at the AAPM 58th Annual Meeting, which will be held in Washington, D.C. July 31 – August 4, 2016. In addition, other team members will present two posters. The annual meeting will bring together more than 11,000 radiation oncologists, medical physicists, radiation therapists and other professionals from around the world to discuss this year’s theme, "Technology Meets Patient Care".

“We are extremely honored to have two posters and an oral presentation at this year's annual AAPM meeting,” said Able. There are limited invitations for oral presentations; therefore, the opportunity speak is notable. “This is a validation of the dedication our physics team has to innovative thinking regarding our patients' care. We are always striving to do better for our patients."

Jeff Esham, FCS Vice President of Radiation Oncology and Radiology, added, “We are very excited about the research we have done and what this means for patients". The oral presentation will focus on “Predicting Accelerator Dysfunction” and improving safety and quality assurance; the poster presentations are on the topics “MLC Based SRS Beam Commissioning – Minimum Target Size Investigation” and “Photon Beam Matching Analysis at Multiple Sites Up to Twelve Years Post Installation.”

Able explained, “Our presentation on Photon Beam Matching Analysis demonstrates why FCS patients can be assured that we will provide a high level of accuracy and precision delivery across our entire radiation oncology practice. Our second presentation on Minimum Target Size validates our ability to treat extremely small brain tumors. We were able to cut minimum fields in half, down to as small as 1cm x 1cm, and compare them to national benchmarks to deliver treatment and confirm the accuracy of treatment. Theoretically, this will result in improved patient outcomes.”

FCS CEO Brad Prechtl said, “This is very gratifying for our entire radiation program, especially considering the strong commitment we made in strengthening our physics team over the past year. This type of national recognition will serve as a cornerstone for ongoing program development and accreditation.”

Dr. William Harwin, Founder & President of FCS, added, “Our radiation oncology program incorporates the newest technologies and advanced treatments, rivaling some larger programs in academic centers. The medical physicists, along with our physicians and other radiation oncology team members, are outstanding and helping to grow our radiation oncology program at Florida Cancer Specialists and improve the future of cancer treatment.”
