Florida Cancer Specialists CEO Cites Practice Growth as Driver
of Success

Benchmark Growth Strategy Benefits Patients and Bolsters Community Oncology

Brad Prechtl
Chief Executive Officer

Fort Myers, FL – July 6, 2016……… Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute (FCS) was highlighted in a recent article in Oncology Business Management, a healthcare industry publication for oncology professionals. The article also featured remarks from Florida Cancer Specialists CEO Brad Prechtl at the 2016 Community Oncology Alliance (COA) National Conference, held in Orlando, FL.

Prechtl was named FCS CEO in 2009, and during the past seven years, he has seen 27 independent oncology practices join the group. He cited the tremendous growth of the practice as a major reason for its success. “We’ll see 60,000 new patients this year alone. We’ll have over 1 million follow-up visits. We’re trying in the state of Florida to bring practices together to keep independent oncology alive and well,” Prechtl said.

Another important reason for FCS’ success, according to Prechtl, has been the company’s ability to lower its reliance on chemotherapy and broaden its footing in oncology pharmacy, which is playing a larger role in cancer treatment with the advent of new targeted oral drugs.

“We purchased over $1 billion worth of drugs in 2015,” said Prechtl. “Prescription fills average 2 to 4 days, a turnaround time that is of great significance to physicians and also to patients, who sometimes wait up to two weeks for a specialty pharmacy to package and deliver. The difference between 4 days versus 14 days can have an incredible impact on a patient’s health and well-being.”

Medicare Selects Florida Cancer Specialists for Oncology Care Model

New Initiative Aims to Improve Cancer Care Nationwide

Fort Myers, FL – July 5, 2016……… Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute (FCS) is among a select group of oncologists nationwide chosen by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to participate in the agency's Oncology Care Model (OCM). Cancer is one of the most common and devastating diseases in the United States: more than 1.6 million new cases of cancer will be diagnosed and cancer will kill an estimated 600,000 Americans in 2016. According to the National Institutes of Health, based on growth and aging of the U.S. population, medical expenditures for cancer in the year 2020 are projected to reach at least $158 billion (in 2010 dollars) – an increase of 27 percent over 2010. A significant proportion of those diagnosed are over 65 years old and Medicare beneficiaries.

Florida Cancer Specialists Joins Initiative To Stop Medicare Experiment on Cancer Drugs

Nation’s Largest Independent Oncology/Hematology Practice Opposes CMS Initiative to Test Alternative Reimbursement Plans

Fort Myers, FL - April 4, 2016…… Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute (FCS), the largest independent community oncology/hematology practice in the United States, is joining other stakeholders from across the healthcare continuum in raising red flags about a proposed plan by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) to “experiment” with alternative reimbursement plans for medications covered under Medicare Part B. If implemented, the CMS proposal could change the way cancer patients receive treatment and restrict patient access to the newest, most advanced cancer treatments. Led by the Community Oncology Alliance (COA), a coalition of over 300 cancer organizations and other healthcare and advocacy groups has signed on to a letter to leaders in Congress urging them to stop CMS from instituting its plan.

FCS CEO Brad Prechtl said, "This so-called ‘experiment’ was ill-conceived and did not seek any input from the oncology community. It certainly is not in the best interest of our patients and, if implemented, could cause a shift away from community-based cancer care, where close to 70% of U.S. cancer patients are treated, and force patients to leave their doctor to seek treatment in a hospital setting, which will not only cost more for the patient, but also be more expensive for CMS, as well.”
